ABPM is the abbreviation of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. In our everyday practice it means blood pressure measurements by a small portable device every 15 minutes during the day and every 30 minutes during the night for 24 hours. It is used to detect suspected or monitor already known hypertension and to assess the efficiency of treatment. It often detects blood pressure jumps during the day or night that can’t be revealed by occasional measurements.
Holter monitoring means 24 hour ambulatory ECG monitoring. Data are collected by a small device and reading and evaluation is done after the device is removed from the patient. It is used in case of short episodes of palpitation, loss of consciousness, and arrhythmias. The test is not inconvenient for the patient as the device doesn’t interfere with everyday life.
