What does a diabetologist do?
Diabetology is a scientific branch dealing with diabetes and its prevention and cure.
How does diabetes develop?
The cause of the disease is a lack of a hormone called insulin produced by the pancreas, or the body’s insensitivity to insulin, or both. Due to absolute or relative insulin deficiency, as cells are unable to absorb glucose in the absence of insulin, blood sugar levels rise and this causes the main symptoms of the disease.
Type 1 (insulin dependent): occurs in children or adolescents. In this case, the body has little or no insulin.
Type 2 (not insulin dependent for a while): develops in adults or in the elderly. In this condition the pancreas produces insulin, but the body cannot use it.
Secondary diabetes: can be associated with many diseases and genetic abnormalities.
What symptoms can it cause?
For type 1: increased thirst, significant hunger, increased urine output, rapid weight loss, severe tiredness
For type 2: significant thirst, increased hunger, frequent urination, fatigue, irritability, impaired vision, itchy skin, slower healing of wounds and inflammatory processes, more frequent infections, tingling and numbness in the hands and feet, sexual problems
If you have a family history of diabetes, are over 40 years of age and/or are overweight, you should pay close attention to regular blood sugar monitoring! At Emineo Private Hospital, our diabetologist will map your complaints and symptoms and perform the necessary diagnostic and laboratory tests. Diabetes therapy is tailored to the individual, depending on the background, stage, and other circumstances of the disease, which may include dietary changes, oral medication, or possibly insulin injection.
Introduction of video consultation
Even in the epidemiological situation related to the coronavirus, we endeavor to resolve the complaints of our patients and reduce their pain. To this end, we have launched our video consultation service, in which our specialists are at our patients’ service on-line.
