Ankle and foot surgery – Our most common surgeries

Bunion surgery

The elimination of bunion deformity is only possible surgically. Recurrence after surgery was still common decades ago, but thanks to modern foot surgery procedures, there is now a definitive solution for bunion repair.  At Emineo Private Hospital, we follow the most up-to-date treatment principles, and the bunion and other surgeries are performed in accordance with the German Society for Foot Surgery protocol. The most important thing is to restore the statics and original anatomical condition of the foot, as this will prevent the protrusion from growing back after the operation.

The operation is performed as a one-day procedure, usually under general anesthesia. During the surgery that lasts approximately 90 minutes, the corrected position of the toe is fixed with special titanium implants. These modern implanted materials do not need to be removed unless they cause a complaint, so our patients do not have to undergo another (hardware removal) surgery! After surgery, varying amount of pain may occur, depending on the patient. After the amount of pain medication is set and the wound is re-dressed, our physiotherapist will teach the patient the physiotherapy exercises to be performed at home until suture is removal and if everything is alright, the patient is discharged home from our inpatient ward.

What are the steps of aftercare?

It is recommended to completely avoid loading the operated foot (use crutches) for 3 weeks after surgery and to always use injections to prevent thrombosis. We recommend the use of special treatment shoes for 4 to 6 weeks after the procedure. It is essential to attend physiotherapy for 2 to 3 months after the operation, and for this, we recommend the Rehabilitation Department of Emineo where the physiotherapists are not only generally trained, but also had special training for all types of surgeries performed in our Hospital. Only continuous and correct physiotherapy will support/increase the range of motion and the return of muscle strength.

Although rehabilitation is lengthy, with modern implants there is no plaster fixation after the surgery and in the special heel-loaded treatment shoes recovery can be made more comfortable.

But why is this good for the patient?

With the surgery, the patient can get rid of the constant pains that have limited him/her in everyday life, work, and the aesthetic appearance of the foot will be similar to the pre-illness state again. The load capacity and range of motion of the operated foot also increases significantly.

Mallet toe surgery

At Emineo Private Hospital, we use an up-to-date mallet toe surgical procedure in accordance with the protocol of the German Society for Foot Surgery. During the operation, among other things, the joint capsule is released, and the shortened tendon is lengthened, and thus the deformed finger is corrected.

The operation last 30 to 60 minutes and is performed as a one-day procedure, usually under general anesthesia, so the patient can leave our private hospital the same day. On 3 or 4 weeks after surgery the wire fixing the toe is removed on an outpatient basis. After the procedure, varying amount of pain may occur, depending on the patient. After setting the level of the pain medication and re-dressing the wound, our physiotherapist will teach the patient the physiotherapy exercises to be performed at home until suture is removal and if everything is alright, the patient is discharged home from our inpatient ward.

Tailor’s bunion surgery

The elimination of tailor’s bunion deformity is only possible surgically. At Emineo Private Hospital, we follow the most up-to-date treatment principles, and the bunion and other surgeries are performed in accordance with the German Society for Foot Surgery protocol. On this basis, during the operation, the calcified deposit is removed, the joint capsule is released and the axis of the metatarsal bone of the little toe is also corrected. The most important thing is to restore the statics and original anatomical condition of the foot, as this will prevent the protrusion from growing back after the operation.

The operation is performed as a one-day procedure, usually under general anesthesia. Stiff big toe (Hallux Rigidus) surgery

At Emineo Private Hospital, we follow the most up-to-date treatment principles, and the hallux rigidus surgeries are performed in accordance with the German Society for Foot Surgery protocol. Based on this, during the 60 to 90-minute operation, we expose the basal joint of the symptomatic 1st toe (big toe) and remove the bony growths formed at the edges. If necessary, the joint capsule is loosened by shortening the bone radius. In very severe cases, the elimination of complaints can only be achieved by stiffening the joint.

The operation is performed as a one-day procedure, usually under general anesthesia. During the operation, we use special titanium implants, which do not need to be removed, unless they cause a complaint, so our patients do not have to undergo another (hardware removal) surgery!  After surgery, varying amount of pain may occur, depending on the patient. Morton's neuroma surgery

During the short, 30 to 60-minute operation, Morton’s neuroma, the nerve nodule at the junction of the nerve fibers, is removed in a one-day surgical procedure. The removed foreign body is always sent for histological examination. Recurrence may occur, although very rarely. At Emineo Private Hospital, we follow the most up-to-date treatment principles, and Mortons’s neuroma surgeries are also performed in accordance with the German Society for Foot Surgery protocol.

Surgery for the bony enlargement of the heel (Haglund's exostosis)

If conservative treatments were not effective, then surgery is the solution. At Emineo Private Hospital, we follow the most up-to-date treatment principles, and the treatment of heel exostoses is also performed in accordance with the German Society for Foot Surgery protocol. Based on this, during a short 30 to 60-minute operation, the bony growth is removed from the heel bone by dropping the minimal incision. The removed bone fragment is sent for histological examination.

The operation is performed as a one-day procedure, usually under general anesthesia.

Lateral ankle ligament reconstruction

In the case of chronic, recurrent lateral ankle sprains, the ultimate solution is foot surgery.

At Emineo Private Hospital, we use the most up-to-date principles, during which we stabilize the lateral ankle ligament system by sewing together the damaged ligament(s).

The operation is performed as a one-day procedure, usually under general anesthesia. After surgery which lasts about 1 hour, varying amount of pain may occur, depending on the patient. After the amount of pain medication is set and the wound is re-dressed, our physiotherapist will teach the patient the physiotherapy exercises to be performed at home until suture is removal and if everything is alright, the patient is discharged home from our inpatient ward.

With the surgery, the patient can functionally use his/her ankle again and after 2 months may even expose it to a more serious sports load again.

Flatfoot surgery

In case of severe, symptomatic flatfoot, the long-term solution is surgery. The ideal time to perform this surgery due to foot growth is when the patient is 9 to 11 years old.

At Emineo Private Hospital, we follow the most up-to-date treatment principles, and the treatment of flatfoot is also performed in accordance with the German Society for Foot Surgery protocol.

The short, approximately 30 minutes surgery is made possible by the fact that there is a bone canal rich in nerve endings between the talus and the heel bone, and its stimulation prompts the foot to reflexively correct its incorrect posture.

During surgery, a specially designed screw is inserted through the talar bone into the bone canal rich in nerve endings between the heel bone and the talus. The rounded smooth end of the screw stimulates to the foot, leading to the cessation of the abnormal foot posture.

The operation is performed as a one-day procedure, usually under general anesthesia.
