The main role of an anaesthesiologist is to cease or alleviate pain during and after surgery and to control and maintain the patient’s vital functions. During consultation with the anaesthesiologist in our clinic, the doctor takes detailed medical history, collects information on previous or current disease and medication, and allergies if applicable.

Anaesthesiology is a specialty using plenty of medicines therefore anaesthesiologists have to know all the undesirable side effects of drugs and interactions between various medications and also which drug should be used in a certain situation.

One of the most frequently used types of anaesthesia is general anaesthesia when the patient loses their consciousness and ability to perceive pain as a result of anaesthetics given intravenously or through a mask. In case of spinal and epidural anaesthesia, analgesic effect is reached by blocking the nerves that run in the spinal cord. Peripheral nerve block is usually used in case of limb surgeries when only the peripheral nerve fibres that innerve the surgical site are blocked with anaesthetics. During infiltration anaesthesia an anaesthetic is injected into the skin and it numbs only the surrounding area.
